Sea moss has been given a lot of attention this past decade and for good reason too. It has its use of being used as a functional food and supplement to help nourish the gut and thyroid. What it comes down to is the sourcing to processing.
For years, I’ve always recommended to support sea moss brands that are transparent of the species, ingredients, and processing methods to ensure the product is of quality. The chances of finding the best brands of sea moss gel are likely from Caribbean and Carib-adjacent owned brands with the cultural ties too the land.
The Caribbean Connection : What is True Sea Moss?
There is not enough education circulating about the types of sea moss. When my cousins say “Irish sea moss”, they are not talking about North American sea moss, but the Caribbean species known as Gracilaria and Kappaphycus alvarezii. A warm-water species that’s found throughout St. Lucia, Jamaica, and Trinidad.
These species are used in functional drinks, soups, porridges, sauces, and just about anything where liquid is need due to its gelling properties and mineral profile.
What I love about Caribbean Sea mosses is the composition of the gel. It’s gentle for everyday use. The gel sooths and nourish the gut without causing bloating, stomach pain, or indigestion. The other hidden benefit is the fact that it’s slightly lower in iodine, so there’s less risk of iodine overload while still absorbing the minerals it has.
Caribbean Sea moss benefits
Caribbean Sea moss possess its own benefits outside of the known Chondrus crispus. Depending on the strain, their strains can improve digestion, restore energy levels, and make it easier to incorporate into foods.

Seamoss gel is rich in iodine and complementary minerals that delivers energy. Its iodine richness gives it a benefit of detoxing excess aluminum in the body. The gel supports the thyroid and the gut microbiome.
K. Alvarezzi main fiber-like component is carrageenan. This is different from the ultra processed carrageenan in processed foods and vegan milks. Instead k-carrageenan may act as a prebiotic by populating the beneficial gut microbes in our guts.
Vicelle’s Sea Moss Product Line
Owned by Michelle V. Knights, Vicelle is a Caribbean owned brand that sells functional sea moss gels, bitters, shilajit, and gummies for everyday wellness. Dr. Michelle has 5 flavors and one pure option for customers, like myself, to choose which best fits their lifestyle.
Her and I spoke for hours discussing the health disparities of our communities.

Vicelle source their Seamoss from St. Lucia, using the Kappaphycus alvarezii species. This gives their Seamoss a creamier finish that makes it easier to integrate into beverages and porridges.
After harvesting, Vicelle explains they use key limes and water, a traditional process, to clean the moss. Their sea moss gel variety are naturally sweetened with agave nectar infused with tropical fruits, and adaptogens, medicinal roots. Their line makes it easier to consume by itself, add to porridge, or add to smoothies.
Family Regimen
I’ve been taking Vicelle’s sea moss for over a month now. The first few days I taste-tested them to create my reels and picture posts for my other social media pages. Out of 5 there were 3 flavor’s I naturally gravitated for their benefits.
The 2 flavor’s I used the most were best managing fatigue, restoring energy levels, and improving my circulation while I get back into stretching. The 2 flavors I rotated with were Caribbean Balance and Dragon Flow+. I personally followed the instructions between 1 to 2 tsp of it daily. I may go up a dose if I am making a smoothie.

Because of the tropical flavor plus energy benefits from Caribbean Balance, I paired it with my Tropical Coconut yogurt bowl to improve low energy. It has additional coconut, mango, and whole food nutrients to support my digestive and nervous system. Dragon Flow+ has a mild tropical taste that pairs well with my blood building tea.
And yes! The Dragon Flow+ integrates well into your morning hot teas.

Pine Blue+ became a new favorite. The citrus-y flavor makes it easier to take my cod liver oil and omega 3 capsules. Iodine, vitamin A, and omega 3 supports thyroid support. The omega 3 is meant to reduce inflammation.
Now I homeschool my little kindergartener. I’m a big believer in giving her what she needs for optimal nourishment and longevity in her younger years. Since she regularly participates in children-led events to interact with other children, I was pleased to see an immune building option called. Soursop Shield Seamoss Gel. Little’s take 1 tsp right in the AM or before we leave home to give her an extra boost to combat the seasonal illnesses that’s been passing around here lately.

She takes Pine Blue+ in rotation as well.

To alternate, Little’s receives additional nutrients from the Berry Banana Sea Moss Gel in her Berry Green Banana porridge. Berry Banana Sea Moss Gel is a simple formula and I always want to support her body’s natural way of removing unwanted substances ( via poop).

If you’re looking for unique flavors, I’d go with Caribbean Balanace+. The Berry Banana and Pine Blue+ is best flavor wise for children and adults alike. For the heart and circulatory system, I’m gonna select the Dragon Flow+. Since the weather is getting cold and seasonal infections are on the rise, Vicelle Soursop Shield+ is in the rotation to support the entire family‘s immune system.
